Crayon Roll Ups

I made these crayon roll ups months ago, so I think this "tutorial" is long past due!

The first step is choosing coordinating fabric for the inside and the outside of the roll up. I choose all bright, fun fabrics with what I thought were kid friendly fabrics. Next I ironed and cut all the fabrics to the sizes I found from this tutorial. If you google crayon roll tutorial there are plenty that pop up I just followed the first one that popped up.

After you cut all the fabrics, pin the front and pocket together. The tutorial I found suggested putting in a layer of felt or batting in-between the front and back fabrics which I did and I loved how stable it made the roll.

After I cut the fabric for about ten different rolls and pinned all the layers together I needed to sew the lines to make the pockets for the crayons. This part was a little tedious because I had to measure each inch between the lines, but if you put some music on or a movie it goes by quickly.

Once I sewed all the lines I pinned the piece of felt and the back fabric to the front, sewed them together leaving a small opening in the end to turn it. I ironed the roll and finished sewing the ends closed and attached a coordinating hair tie. Velcro or string might also work but I have plenty of extra hair ties lying around the house and they worked fine.

Next, choose buttons to sew on the back of the roll to wrap the hair tie around when rolled up. I put crayons in the roll, then rolled it up to see exactly where to put the button. I put a small mark on the fabric where to sew the button then hand sewed all the buttons on.

In the Pleated Poppy tutorial she finished the rolls with a small stitch close the edge around the whole roll. I think it makes the finished product look clean and professional but at that point I was done! It's all about preference.

This is such a simple project for anyone who has some experience with sewing but I think even beginner sewers could make these just with a little extra time.

I ended up giving a roll up to Mickey's nephew for Easter with a pad of paper and a crayons. Click on the link to see Xander playing with his new crayon roll.
